With the current state of Athens and increasingly common hiccups in public transportation, securing a private transfer can be a wise investment. There are two levels of service: the first is that of the large companies who offer dependable service without personality. The second is provided by smaller, individually owned companies that will be your friends by the end of the day. Our top transfer providers are dependable and personable. The top five on our list of transfer providers are similar and thereby difficult to rank: all are well regarded by their ofttimes returning clientele for their professional attitudes, reliability, excellent English and well maintained, air-conditioned vehicles. While the owners of the companies mentioned are also drivers- making their passengers feel as if they're in the presence of a celebrity in some cases- they all have fleets of drivers that have been approved by themselves.
These companies can be used for simple port and airport transfers but they also offer the traditional tours:
-Athens is typically offered in a full, eight-hour tour and a half-day version of four hours.
-What's called the "Argolida" tour covers Ancient Corinth, Mycenes, the port town of Nafplio, and exceptionally Epidaurus- though as it's a bit further you may have to discuss it with your driver.
-The temple of Poseidon at Sounion is most popular to do around sunset and may include a stop at a fish taverna for dinner afterward.
-Ancient Delphi, a three-hour drive, is possible in one day and includes time for lunch and a short visit to either the village of Arachova or the monastery of Ossias Loukas.
Places such as the hanging monasteries of Meteora and the site of Ancient Olympia are also common requests, but their distances will require at least one night's stay outside of Athens. The drivers expenses and highway tolls are customarily factored into the rate.
It's important to note that these drivers, while usually knowledgeable of history, are not licensed tour guides and can therefore not accompany their clients beyond the ticket point of ancient sites. Tour guides are hired separately; any established driver will have his or her favorites who can be arranged for the day of the tour.
Last, and very important, all private transfers will be conducted in either company-painted vehicles (in cases such as Amphitrion and Kakayias) or a taxi, limo, or Minibus. Should your driver appear in a private car or minivan it's considered an illegal vehicle; that driver is likely not insured to carry you and can even be arrested if checked by the police.
