The hotels in Omonia are ideal for well seasoned travelers who are looking for a base that's well connected with public transportation and offers good value. The downtown location is animated with life during the day, but can be unnerving after dark. It's not as ideal as the sweeter, safer areas of Plaka or Monastiraki and slightly less central than Syntagma. Hoteliers are aware of this and up the ante with good mattresses, trendy decor, low prices, and extremely friendly personnel. We'll repeat that choosing a hotel in Omonia means being prepared to confront some less pleasant realities of urban life such as drug use and petty theft, but by staying alert and avoiding much walking after dark, many people find their stays in our top ten Omonia hotels to be well worth it. All of the hotels on our top ten list are within half of a mile from Omonia Square.
Should your stay in Athens require you to be very near Omonia, our top three hotels, all part of the Grecotel and Classical hotel chains, are excellent options. The Classical Athens Imperial is a stately five star while the Fresh Hotel and Classical Baby Grand are popping up in travel literature everywhere as two of the most funky, high design hotels Athens has to offer. Art Hotel will also appeal to jet setters looking to save some bucks; its reputation as being an economical choice with style is well known and therefore fills up fast.
Hotels on our top ten list that fall closer to other neighborhoods include the Monastiraki mansion, the Magna Grecia, and the simple Arethusa hotel slightly farther on the same street: Mitropolios. The Magna Grecia, an eclectic boutique hotel, is ranked as one of our top romantic places to stay while the Arethusa is good for travelers in search of basic amenities, nothing more. Both are very near Monastiraki and Syntagma Square as well as Omonia.
Kolokotroni Street is seeing a positive boost in new businesses making the Carolina hotel an interesting choice for travelers. It's located immediately next door to one of our top rated bars,
Booze Cooperativa as well as being along a pedestrian path that runs through the textiles district. Guests are pleased with the quality of rooms according to the low price; it has a high percent of return visitors.
The Melia and the Titania are large hotels that cater to groups and businesspersons. Of the two, we prefer the Melia even though the Titania is more ideally located along Panepistimiou Avenue. The Best Western Museum hotel is a comfortable choice for families and very close to the
National Archaeological Museum.
