Visitors to Athens would do well to chose a hotel from our top ten hotels near
Plaka and the
Ancient Agora as these areas are the most charming, well protected, and walkable in the entire city. All six of the ancient sites included in the Acropolis ticket package are within a ten minute walk:
The Acropolis,
Theatre of Dionysos,
Ancient Agora,
Roman Agora,
Keraimikos Cemetery, and
Temple of Zeus. Shopping is at hand via souvenir-laden Adrianou Street,
Monastiraki Flea Market, or modern stores along
Ermou. Some of our most recommended
tavernas and restaurants can be found within. If the excellent logistics don't bowl you over than the romantic labyrinthine steps and stonewashed houses from another era will do the trick.
Our first three are in the 4-5 star category and offer upscale services, gorgeous suites, and in the case of the Divani Palace Acropolis, ruins within the hotel walls. The Hotel Hera is in a quiet area just around the corner of pedestrian
Areopagitou Street, perfect for people who love a pleasant walk.
The New Acropolis Museum is not even five minutes away. The Electra Palace Hotel is deeper within Plaka and provides a more neighborhood feel. The hotel grounds and roof garden are held in excellent regards for their views and quality in food and service which is why she's our number one hotel in Plaka.
The Hotel Herodion and Philippos Hotels are owned by the same family and have the feel of a small hotel but the decor of a European hotel. Also very near the
New Acropolis Museum, they're quiet and great for families and other early-to-beds. The AVA is also a choice place for families due to their spacious rooms, a real treat in space-crunched Athens.
For those looking for simple things: cleanliness, friendliness, a room rate that won't kill the rest of the vacation, we highly recommend the Central Hotel, if only for the jacuzzi on the roof with a view of the Acropolis. The Acropolis House is a legend for a hotel that offers quirk and treats you as part of the family and has, perhaps, the best breakfast in its three star category, though we do recommend that you request a room away from the kitchen as it can get loud in the A.M. Lastly the Acropolis Museum Boutique Hotel and the Plaka Hotel are at a disadvantage in the noise factor as they're located on busy streets and have small rooms, but as far as service, view, and convenience in location are concerned, they're top.
