Panepistimiou Avenue is perhaps the most well planned road of Athens, linking together the city's two main squares of
Syntagma and
Omonia. Visitors will find that by choosing hotels located in this busy, commercial district they might compromise charm but gain the convenience of location; there's hardly a single Athens attraction that is not accessible by the many buses or metro stations within a five minute walk.
The National Library, part of the grand architectural trilogy of buildings of learning, is directly outside of the Panepistimiou metro. As stated many places elsewhere in our Athens destination pages, of the two major neighborhoods that this area falls between, Omonia and Syntagma, we greatly prefer Syntagma for being safer and more tourist-friendly. For that reason, this top ten list features hotels within half a mile of Syntagma Square.
Yet again, our top three hotels are the other grand trilogy: the Classical King George, Grande Bretagne, and Athens Plaza. They're fail-safe ways of enjoying your stay in Athens thanks to superb staffing, prime location, and splendid accommodations. The nearby, boutique style Athens Diamond is a more economical choice that doesn't compromise quality even if the rooms are on the small side. The Amalia and Cypria fall in the same four star category as the Diamond but are more like three star hotels compared to European standards. They attract clientele that is looking for choice location and don't mind the less fancy surroundings. All of these hotels are directly on or behind Syntagma Square, the Cypria hotel being just along the pedestrian streets around Ermou.
For true boutique, the Periscope in the chic district of
Kolonaki will make for a satisfying stay. Business travelers will find good deals at the Titania, located just on Panepistimiou and slightly closer to Omonia Square. The outside might be more glamorous than the interior but it still offers everything a working person needs including early breakfast service in case of meetings, but the basic rooms might not suit a family or couple traveling. The best budget choices of the area are the Arethusa and Plaka hotels located on Mitropolios Street, a short walk from
Monastiraki Square.
