The
Archaeological Museum of Athens is known throughout the world for having the greatest collection of Hellenic artifacts of anyone. The area surrounding the museum, primarily the neighborhoods of Omonia and
Exarcheia, has become home to the intellectual rebels of the city such as artists, students, and communists, but also a substantial number of immigrants. The area is not for everyone; parts of it might feel neglected or unsafe, particularly at night. The surrounding hotels have responded by upping their service and lowering the prices of large, comfortable rooms attracting streetwise budget hunters. Our top ten list of hotels near the National Archaeological Museum includes those which we feel have done the best job of balancing the deal as well as those that are better located. All of the hotels are within one mile of the Archaeological Museum.
We've heard nothing but nice things about the Art Hotel, a stunning showcase of modern design that keeps room rates within reason. The staff goes out of their way to be supportive and friendly; the hotel's Omonia address is at least very convenient to the rest of the historic center and major points of interest such as the
Acropolis. The Best Western chain of hotels, particularly the Museum Hotel and the Zinon, are quite close to the museum and offer predictable comfort and amenities. For luxury hotels, the Melia and the Classical Athens Imperial are the area's best options. Novotel, a French hotel chain, is an economical hotel that uses bright, fun colors in their interiors and the Polis Grand Hotel is a simple choice for a no frills base. Generally all of these hotels are perfect once inside, but the area around Kaningos Square and Plateia Vathis can be downright scary after dark, even if the crime is generally petty theft and drug use as opposed to anything violent.
The sister hostel/hotels of Orion and Dryades are located in a calm part of Exarcheia and will appeal to those who appreciate the natural area around
Strefi Hill and artistic, progressive neighbors in regard to the area's locals, but be prepared to get some leg muscle when moving toward anywhere else in the city.
