Brand name hotels in Athens are perfect for travelers who want to be adventurous during the day but know a good, comfortable bed and reliable service awaits them when they're ready to retire. Our top ten brand name hotels include some of the best hotels in the city as well as plain old comfort brands that don't offer much surprise, but sometimes that's a good thing. Number one on our list is the Athens Hilton Hotel- largest hotel in the city and recently updated for the Olympic Games to reflect a standard of oppulence appreciated by the American clientele that is its majority. The InterContinental of Athens is likewise large and high on luxury- one of the city's top rated restaurants is located here- but is preferred by a more international crowd due to its convenient access to a major conference and exhibition center next door. Those who fly red eyes in or out of the Venizelos Airport appreciate the decision of Sofitel to grant Athens with one of their modern, comfortable additions, a five minute walk from the hall of Arrivals. We prefer it to the Holiday Inn which can often be more expensive and yet offer less in amenities- not to mention you need a shuttle to get to and from the airport. The Greek chain of hotels called "Grecotel" has made a positive impression on its guests with warm, colorful interiors and cheerful staff. Our favorite in-city location is the decadent King George Palace, but the Acropolis Select offers similar qualities for slightly lower room rates due to being located in the less desirable area of Omonia. Their Cape Sounion resort is perfect for those who prefer to get away. The Astir Palace along the Apollo Coast, operated by the Westin hotel chain, is another premium choice for a resort. Starwood owners are welcome to use their points for a room or suite. The Best Western hotels of Athens are predictably adequate to the needs of a traveler and many of them convenient to the major sites of the city. We recommend the Ilisia for those in the city or the Fenix in Glyfada for being near the sea. It's worth noting that the hotels' amenities are substandard for the four star category they're given, but they're still considered to have rooms for a good value. Finally for an all out- well rounded hotel, we believe the Marriott is as solid as a Honda. The rooftop pool and tiki bar combined with shuttle service into the city center balances the hotel's off-center location along Syngrou Avenue. There's just something to be said for knowing what to expect, a philosophy the Marriott holds dear to its corporate heart.
