Cheap hotels are abundant in Athens, but of of all of the categories to exercise discernment, this is one of the most important. Hotel standards such as cleanliness and a helpful staff vary wildly; the hotel's location can totally alter your experience of the city. Diogenes, the Cynic, was said to sleep in a pot because he believed there was virtue in simplicity. We say a clean room, good bed, and being in walking distance of everything are also pretty good virtues in your Athens hotel. These are our favorite hotels and hostels ranging between one and three stars.
The
Acropolis House is top on our list because there's no other hotel quite like it in the whole city. Panos and his staff make you feel like part of the family; its position between modern Syntagma and old world
Plaka offers the best of two worlds: a neighborhood that feels authentically Athenian, full of local residents and business owners, and a cobblestone road that slowly transitions into winding, flower-boxed alleys and other scenes that fill the traveler's soul. The
Adonis is just across the street, should the twenty-eight rooms of the Acropolis House be full. Both are within five minutes to
Syntagma, ten minutes of the
New Acropolis Museum,
Monastiraki Square, or the
Temple of Zeus, and fifteen minutes from the
Acropolis.
Athens Backpackers and the
Student Traveller's Inn are our two favorite hostels. They have many of the practical amenities shared by most Athens hostels like twenty-four hour access, free wifi, and on site meals at low prices, but rise above the rest due to their positioning in the areas around Plaka and the Acropolis. Between the two, Athens Backpackers has nicer facilities. The
Hostel Aphrodite gets its place on the list for knowing their audience - those who want distance from tourists and proximity to a bar (supplied on the premises.)
Athens International Youth Hostel is not on our list because of its location in an area uninteresting to visitors and a good ways from everything, save a metro. We would rather use the ticket money for a Mythos beer or souvlaki.
Going one step up, the
Arethusa Hotel,
Acropolis Museum Boutique Hotel, and
Art Hotel are all on the lower end of the spectrum but offer modern, comfortable interiors. The Arethusa is just around the corner from Syntagma Square and a straight shot to the Monastiraki flea market. The Acropolis Museum Boutique Hotel is situated on a busy avenue that doesn't match its warm, romantic interior, but is within a ten minute walk to the Temple of Zeus or the New Acropolis Museum. The Art Hotel is the prettiest of the bunch but is in noisy
Omonia, an area close to everything but worn around the edges, requiring acute attention to your surroundings and personal belongings.
The
Hotel London is a good budget option for beach access and conveniently
en route to the airport.
