Description:
Way back in 2000, the Onassis Foundation chose the winning design out of 66 competitors for their new Cultural Centre- the French firm "Architecture Studio." Good things take time. The building finally had their opening ceremonies in December of 2010. The impressive, minimalist structure is a combination of marble and metal which plays with the light of day, and by night is a-glow from within.
18,000 sq. m. of interior space includes:
An 880-seat amphitheatre for theatrical and musical performances, cinematic screenings and conferences.
A 220-seat auditorium for smaller-scale events of the same
A 60-seat capacity lecture room
An underground exhibition center
A meeting space/ bar built entirely around the work of Greek artist, Aemilia Papaphilippou
A rooftop restaurant and cafe
All year round the building hosts various events and cultural activities open to the public. Check the website for ticket and event information. The box office is open from Mon-Sun: 12:00-21:00
and the building is open from Mon-Fri: 10:00-17:00
To access, take the no.2 Red line (Agios Dimitrios/ Agios Antonios) to Fix station and exit Syngrou/Drakou. It's about a ten minute walk to Panteion University where you take the blue stairs down and cross Syngrou via the underpass. You can also wait for a bus or trolley to take you four stops down to the "Panteion" stop.
