If you find yourself in the Airport/Spenard area after dark there is plenty to do and more importantly to drink. Since opening in 1970,
Chilkoot Charlie’s has definitely become a local favorite. This venue has sawdust floors, three dance areas, and hosts many famous national music acts. For a more low key evening you should make plans to see a movie at the
Bear Tooth Theater Pub. Here you can enjoy dinner and drinks while you watch the movie. Be sure to order the Moose’s Tooth beer on tap, because you wouldn’t want to miss this home brew. You will also not want to overlook the
Fancy Moose Lounge. The name suggests you’ll see some fancy-dressed moose, but in fact you’ll get a lesson in Anchorage’s aviation history. Not to say you’ll be in school, but while you order the local brew from the Midnight Sun Brewing Company you’ll be able to get a real sense of Anchorage’s flying heritage.
Downtown is a fantastic place to get a great cocktail or see live entertainment. Check out
Bernie’s Bungalow for a delicious martini and learn some new dance moves. The bar is small and dark, but it lends itself very well to the young professional crowd. Now that you’ve hit up Bernie’s Bungalow be sure to make time for
Darwin’s Theory. Locals and tourists love this spot, because the patrons become less and less evolved as the night progresses. For an evening dedicated to performing arts you should buy tickets to see shows at any one or all of these theaters downtown;
Discovery Theatre,
Evangeline Atwood Concert Hall, or the
Sydney Laurence Theater.
