Old City Centre/Old Side
Amsterdam's Old Side (Oude Zijde) of the historic city centre was actually settled after the city's New Side, and is named after the Old Church (Oude Zijde) which occupies its center. The Oude Kerk is the city's oldest church, and it is no coincidence that it's located in the heart of the Red Light District. When sailors stopped in Amsterdam for a night or two, they would enjoy their time on land by visiting the bars and women, but couldn't return to sea without buying forgiveness for their sins from the conveniently located church. Next to the Old Church you can find Museum Amstelkring, a secret church located in the attic of a wealthy merchant's home.The east of the neighborhood is bordered by Warmoestraat, the city's gay / party street. It has many coffeeshops and bars, including the Winston Kingdom, a small club with an event every night of the week.
Amsterdam's Chinatown is also in this neighborhood. Called the Zeedijk (or Sea Dijk), the street is where the city's old dijk used to be, and has a wide variety of Asian restaurants popular with both locals and tourists. The Thai Bird has beautiful décor and great food at reasonable prices.
At the end of the Zeedijk you will find the Nieuwmarkt, a square with many bars and the historic Weigh House at its centre. The Nieuwmarkt also marks the beginning of the Jewish Quarter, where you can find Rembrandt's House (Rembrandthuis), a popular tourist destination.
