The Dam square is arguably Amsterdam's most central point. It's a busy square which is bordered by the royal palace and the 'New' church on one side and the upmarket Bijenkorf department store and Grand Hotel Kraznapolski on the other. Pop into the Bijenkorf for one of their delicious cakes, or head up to the top floor where they have an extensive self-service, but high-quality restaurant with a roof terrace and excellent views. During the summer the square is often filled with a fairground. The Royal Palace has been hidden behind scaffolding for the last few years due to a multi-million Euro facelift, but in 2011 the inside at least was reopened to the public.
