Whether you're coming into Amsterdam from Schiphol airport or from another country by train, you are most likely to enter the city through Centraal Station. It's a great starting point for exploring some of the best historical sights of Amsterdam.
Centraal Station was built in the late 1800s on the site of the old port (it rests on four man-made islands). Since it has always been Amsterdam's main entry point, the city center developed around it.
If you walk straight ahead once exiting the station at the Southern Side, you'll reach Dam square. This is the city's historic center as it was the site of the original dam over the river Amstel that gave Amsterdam its name. Today the square is dominated by the Royal Palace. The Red Light District is also conveniently close to Centraal Station, and with good reason. Just as it's entertaining today's visitors who arrive in Amsterdam by train, it entertained the worlds sailors who entered Amsterdam by boat a century earlier.
As the area around Centraal is the city's oldest, this is also the place to see some Medieval Amsterdam. Nieuwmarkt has the best remaining Medieval architecture, the Waag, now a restaurant and a great spot to stop for a drink or lunch during a busy day of sightseeing. Amsterdam's oldest bar can also be found at Zeedijk 1.
