Amsterdam East is a highly under rated part of the city and a neighbourhood of contrasts. It plays hosts to the cities historical zoo, the botanical gardens, various museums and a complete mix of architectural styles. The Jewish neighbourhood called the Plantage reflects the wealth of its previous inhabitants due to the amount of stone used in the buildings. In the 17th Century, stone was extremely expensive as it had to be imported. Around another corner you have the old warehouses which were used by rich merchants and a little further out you have the very modern docklands area.
