NileGuide Expert tip:
The views of Acapulco Bay from the garden are as spectacular as from the expensive hotels but at a fraction of the price.
Description:
If your idea of an active day in Acapulco leans more toward leisurely strolls through beautiful gardens, make sure to visit Jardin Botanico de Acapulco. Opened in 2002, the botanic garden crowns a hilltop above the city in the South Sierra Madre Mountains at an altitude of 600 to 1,300 feet. The location provides stunning panoramic views of Santa Lucia Bay.
The property, which is studded with enormous granite boulders, is crossed by two creeks and displays both native and introduced vegetation. Plantings include trees like the endangered Palo Morado (Peltogyne Mexicana), and coconut and Madagascar palms; desert flora such as agave, yucca, and aloe; ferns and vines, and gorgeous flowers too numerous to mention. Jardín Botánico de Acapulco is also an important research and education center with special emphasis on preserving threatening native species. The botanic garden is a respite from the crowds at
Playa Icacos and
Playa Hornos.
