Glen Aulin is a flat, forested basin (a glen) at the foot of a significant cascade along the Tuolumne River. It's about 5 miles downhill of Tuolumne Meadows, though with most of the elevation loss in the last mile. The park concession operates the Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp here, a simple backcountry lodge of tent cabins with a central bathroom and dining hall. Very popular, it's hard to get reservations here. Backpackers can also camp in the glen, near the High Sierra Camp, where there are bear-proof food lockers. This is a stopping place on the Pacific Crest Trail or a good basecamp for exploring the aquatic displays along the Tuolumne River. Foremost of these must be Waterwheel Falls, about a mile further down the river toward the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne; Waterwheel is a spectacle to be seen, with numerous 'rooster-tails' rocketing great distances out and downward.
