Whether you're window shopping, filling out your wardrobe, or getting a head start on holiday gift purchases, you'll certainly find what you're looking for in one of the many malls, markets, or shopping districts of Taiwan's capital city. You can find huge mega-malls all over the world, and while Taipei has its share of them, one of the best shopping experiences to be had is in the open-air Shilin Night Market. Taiwan, like China, is known for jade, and each weekend the city plays host to a jade market selling everything from bangles to small Buddha statues. While not the all-in-one shopping experience like Taipei 101, travelers looking for that uniquely Taipei souvenir may find just what they're looking for.

There are plenty of shops to keep you busy for weeks in Taipei proper, but you'll find some interesting local handicrafts and knick-knacks in the quaint shops lining the main wharf area of Danshui township, just a short train ride from Taipei. The area offers a more leisurely shopping experience away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
